Distance learning: Presenting at Pelecon 2012 for the Hydrographic Academy project

As you know I have been working on the Hydrographic Academy (HA) project with a dedicated team to create TEL distance learning modules/programme for the hydrographic industry. I am pleased to announce that we have been given the opportunity to present at PELeCON (Plymouth e-Learning Conference) at Plymouth University (18-20th April 2012). This is Plymouth University's 7th e-learning conference which is known for drawing people from around the world into the ever growing field of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL). The presentation is called:
All hands on deck: Developing technology-enhanced distance learning for the marine industry, a project ultimately all about team work. The presentation will provide a brief overview of the newly formed Hydrographic Academy; its intended student market; the constraints presented by their remote location; and the challenges of developing an ‘offline-course’ for the hydrographic surveying industry.

Bridging the gap between web designer and mobile app developer

I've managed to squeeze in some time in the last few days to experiment with some of the
improving technologies for mobile app development. Namely: PhoneGap, granted it's nothing new as it has been around for a fair while. Where I think it's really making a difference is being included in Abobe Dreamweaver CS5.5, fantastic, thank you Adobe! This version allows regular web designers/coders to utilise their skills to produce mobile applications. It includes a starter template that has been coded using the popular jQuery Mobile (a javascript library framework for mobile devices). Of course this also offers developers a route to accessing certain hardware functionality for devices. Essentially the web designer builds a website suitable for a specific screen resolution (mobile device) and then converts it to app.

For me, using any browser based technologies are a fantastic way to go, as there is good standardisation across devices to helps develop in HTML(5), CSS and Javascript. It's not all handed on a plate, as I'm finding it necessary to learn a new skill set for mobile interface design/development. Apps are certainly the buzz word these days but there is predominately a huge amount of effort involved in creating them. This coupled with different rules for distribution across platforms, makes life difficult for the educational developer, or any developer for that matter.

For example, at the time of writing, it is not possible to distribute iPhone of iPad apps via email or file-sharing systems, as Apple has chosen to do everything through iTunes. Granted there is a good emulator that allows you to see this working, but nothing beats testing it on the device first hand. Where as, Android allows users have the ability to install 3rd party applications (Android users, look for the options in settings > applications, see Andorid 3.2 screenshot).

I find that throwing the installer APK files for Android into Dropbox a very convenient way of testing or sharing your work with others. Equally APK files are recognised in email attachments, another way to distribute (small) applications. It's a free and easy way for academia to test and use apps, without getting into developer licencing and some of the headaches associated with that...

I think for the moment the important thing to remember is that desktop and mobile development are different, the key to effective app creation is understanding what constitutes a good app. Throwing an 'app in progress' onto the markets can lead to very harsh and unforgiving feedback, there is a lot of work to be done before it's good enough.

I think apps have their place, but one thing that concerns me is creating Apps for the sake of creating them. Usually most things can go into a trusty web browser. This can easily be made offline and probably do just as much as an app (if you know how to tap into the hardware) it just takes a little careful programming. A fusion of the two is probably the best way to do these things, although, with application space being a precious as gold on some devices, can we justify it? I think this will be an interesting exercise in trial and error...with some honest user feedback thrown in...

Youtube from the comfort of your webcam

Just a quick post on a handy Youtube feature. It allows users to record video (within a webrowser) via their own webcams and publish to the account. Ensure that the webcam is installed and functioning. I have used Google Chrome with good effect. you may be asked to install Shockwave.

How well this works for you is very much limited to the upload speed of your internet connection, please check your Internet Service Provider if using at home or off campus. If you are using on standard broadband it could be around 0.5mb upload. some of the fibre networks are now 1.5mb+ which are more likely to cope. Plymouth University Campus has excellent bandwidth, I found no problems upload this way. You have the option to review the footage before publishing. Remember, when selecting the publish button always change the setting for the new upload to either private or 'only with link' unless you don't mind the default 'live to the world'!

Did you know that as long as your Youtube account is in good standing, adding your mobile phone number to confirm you are 'human' by a verification code allows you to unlock the 15 minute limit on a standard account... it is all explained in the youtube support. Just don't break copyright or you loose all privileges.

Practical uses of using a webcam:
  • Video diary
  • saves using your hard drive space
  • Access to the Youtube video editor to cut out errors
  • Add other videos in the editor and inter-cut with transitions
  • Video available to anyone on the web (if desired)

Twitter for the Hydrographic Academy

Just a quick update and to mention I finalised the creation of the Hydrographic Academy Twitter account. This with a view of increasing awareness of the Academy. I see this as an addition to the HA blog I created last yearI went for the same background I created for the blog to maintain consistency, it was a bit of cropping and tweaking as Twitter is particular with its background graphics (equally, graphic files should not be too large as people use this on their mobile devices - predominately).  @HydroAcademy was chosen as the tag name to keep things simple. The Twitter account also points back to the University Extranet pages as this is a third party product I think it is important that we demonstrate the true origin of the Academy. 


Twitter from my own experiences, if used properly, is a good microblogging tool.  It has potential to work well at conferences and similar events in that it reaches out to a wider audience, not just the members attending, but those outside.  It is also a great way to keep the Plymouth University community (who have their own twitter account) up to date on what we have been doing.  The team is looking forward to using this when we visit Oceanology International 2012 in London this March.

Waterproofing mobile technologies for fieldwork


I'm often looking around for technologies that make those rainy fieldwork trips less of a worry, particularly when using using expensive equipment. I was rather impressed with the simplicity of the 'special' coating provided by Liquipel. I've seen similar concept provided by companies called RainX for making car windscreens aqua-phobic, but requires re-application every so often. Perhaps this could be a permanent solution for most electronic devices? Typically students have to take protective covers such as otterbox for the devices we supply, it works but with some loss in usability.

I'm not advocating the product in the video but only highlighting the potential. It is not clear what the longevity of this special coating is, and I note that at the time of writing there are a limited number of devices that are approved (fingers crossed mobile manufacturers use this process themselves - perhaps the phone insurance companies could offer it free or at a discounted rate...). I also wonder if this will extend to other solid state mobile devices like pads, I think it could then really catch on if it does...

Hydrographic Academy module 1 trial starts

Rather excited, as the first batch of trial students for the Hydrographic Academy module 1 start today! The team, including fellow learning technologists Jon Scott and Luke Denner had been busy finalising content right up to Christmas. It's an international affair and we are pleased that the Christmas post did not delay the delivery of the coursework.

Interface design: what's it all about?

I have produced a fair number of websites and interfaces in my career as a researcher, lecturer, developer and now Learning Technologist. It's an exciting process and I'm sure many interface designers will agree with the excitement of deploying a huge range of content, ideas and approaches to their final output. So I thought I would share some of my thought process on what to expect.

It goes without saying that content for teaching materials is vital! However, when it comes to design of the interface itself, all suggestions have to be taken into consideration, sensibly. For me a good designer takes the ideas from the client on-board and then sympathetically feeds back the disadvantages or benefits of those ideas, describing how they will best fit. The designer then goes away, researches, experiments with the concepts and content, thinking about how this affects the interface, make the necessary sympathetic tweaks to produce a final draft for their clients to view. There are of course times when content and interface are happening simultaneously, the positive is that the designer can help keep some consistency with the process as it unfolds.

It's all about the content...where is it?
On the topic of content (teaching materials), I often hear myself saying this to a lot to clients, "its all about the content" as we cannot built an effective interface without having or know what the content will be. There is also often a misconception that providing teaching content is easy. Scribble some ideas on a piece of paper and knock it all together on a computer, then throw in all the content "...it's the digital age, practically automatic these day..."...not really, its just a different approach to packaging content. We have to have a holistic grasp of appropriate electronic media and software, as well as the pedagogic. We may have to deploy different programming languages, building from scratch; or if we are lucky off the shelf packages that 'may' have some flexibility to allow for good design acumen. Granted there are some technological short cuts, but in reality it's a lot of hard work and head scratching to do it properly. From a learning technologist perspective, we have to think on many levels, its actually a project managing affair in its own right. After all, the interface is the pivotal source of information, if this does not work properly, how will anyone use the materials efficiently?

Mardi Gras
I find the juggling act really starts in the later stages, when sharing the final drafts of the design with the clients. There is often excitement and with this comes the clients need to bolt on some last minute additions to feel part of the final design. It's an unusual situation, of flattery combined with some stomach churning anguish regarding how it could affect the final design. What we have to be careful with at this point is that we are not damaging the original design concepts (which you have likely spent months researching), there is good reason for this. It's vital to maintain consistency in our design, ensuring that the final product does not end up like a 'Mardi Gras of content': very colourful, all singing and dancing but the end user is lost in the colours and noise. This is by no means to say that those ideas are daft or inappropriate, it is purely a case of establishing if they will all make comfortable bed fellows. The designer has to ensure that all the ideas and content flow together as coherently as possible, sometimes at the expense of loosing some of the clients inputs, but with the hope there are no red faces along the way. This is particularly important if the interface forms part of a wider 'identity' (be it corporate or educational). Does the client already have other websites, or existing teaching materials elsewhere, do they share some commonality, does the existing content need to be re-purposed? These all affect final designs. Sometime you have to use a pre-designed learning environment with very poor customisation tools or loads of 'lock-downs', in those cases you have to make do, it's up to us to intelligently add content and design ideas to somewhat match the complete vision.

What about the learning experiences?
Each part of a learning experience has to fit the intended audience, such as accessibility (can it be used with screen readers, will it be accessible in specific operating systems or software environments) and the usability, what about cross platform comparability, will the users actually be able to work with this interface in the way it was intended. Will the interface become a barrier to learning? Will any students be disadvantaged if certain functionality is unavailable to them? How will the different forms of formative study provide the grounding for their summative projects? The list goes on, it's not always easy to second guess the anticipated student use of such a system.

As we are essentially educational developers with technology 'plug-ins', we have to pull from both pedagogic and technological approaches to create the best learning environment. A lot of the initial designs can be used by studying other systems, researching pedagogic research papers on learning environments and of course the all important, student trials. This is probably the most important icing on the cake for learning technologists, try your interface with a small sample audience. See how it fairs... fingers crossed.

One thing is for sure, interface design is one of the many skill sets a Learning Technologist (LT) possess, it often amazes me just how multi-skilled we have to be. I hope this short piece gives you a taster of my own experiences, provides some insight to those wishing to design or to understand the role of an LT. Ultimately, user interface design is centralised project management, a lot of hard work, but often very rewarding! Happy designing :)

Packaging the Hydrographic Academy software user interface

Today we finished packaging the content for the user interface for the Hydrographic Academy trial students, ready for posting out first thing in the morning! We've been working right up until Christmas to ensure they are ready and available for the new year.

From a technological point of view we had a lot of fun testing how many copy processes we could push through our systems. Pleased to see that the data buses were pretty resilient and we could sit back and watch the data flow while getting on with other work! Tweaking and completing the Hydrographic Academy user interface

I finished tweaking the Hydrographic Academy (HA) user interface today YAY! (I confess to a few hours over the weekend too...).

Essentially the HA team had a meeting last week to discuss the content and layout of the final, thanks to all for their inputs and suggestions. I'm pleased to say that the final interface has been given the gold seal of approval by the team, so we are all feeling chuffed at completing in time for Christmas. I have to give a big thank you to the HA team, they are a terrific bunch of people to work with, and they have all contributed to making this interface work!
